Traditional MSW Programs in New York City
A traditional MSW program is defined as a full-length master’s program that is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) to provide professional training and academic instruction in clinical and/or macro practice social work. Like master’s programs in other fields, these programs require applicants to have completed a bachelor’s degree. However, traditional MSW program applicants are not required to have studied social work at the bachelor’s level or to have earned a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree. Students in a traditional MSW program generally take two years of full-time study or three to four years of part-time enrollment to earn their degree. As part of this process, they are required to engage in a minimum of 900 hours of field education, a signature pedagogy in social work that places students at agencies and organizations so that they can learn how social work is practiced in real-world conditions under the supervision of experienced social workers.
In NYC, there are 12 schools with CSWE-accredited MSW programs for traditional standing students that are offered in either a campus-based format or a hybrid format that includes some online instruction but that requires students to attend a significant number of campus-based sessions. These programs are grouped together as “campus-based” programs. There are also four NYC-based schools that have online MSW program options. Finally, students who are currently employed in the human services sector may be eligible for the One Year Residency (OYR) programs offered by Columbia University, Hunter College, and NYU. OYR programs require students to have at least two years of professional human services experience. Students in these programs are able to complete field education requirements at their place of employment.

Advanced Standing MSW Programs in New York City
Advanced standing is a designation that refers to the admissions requirements and curricular structure of an MSW program. Advanced standing programs offer a curriculum that is designed specifically for students who hold a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree from a CSWE-accredited undergraduate program. Students in CSWE-accredited BSW programs complete much of the same foundational coursework that full-time traditional MSW students (those without a BSW degree) take in the first year of their MSW studies. In addition, BSW programs require at least 500 hours of field education. Rather than making qualified BSW graduates repeat courses and field placements that they have already completed, advanced standing MSW programs allow students to begin their MSW studies with the specialization coursework and field placements that are typically reserved for the second year of a full-time traditional MSW program. Thus, advanced standing status significantly reduces the number of courses and field education hours required to earn an MSW, allowing students to fulfill graduation requirements in one year of full-time enrollment or roughly two years of part-time enrollment.
While a BSW degree is the baseline requirement for advanced standing status, most programs have additional conditions for admission. For example, many programs require students to have earned their BSW degree within the last five to ten years in order to establish eligibility for advanced standing status. Some programs also have minimum cumulative undergraduate grade point average (GPA) requirements, typically 3.0 or higher on a four-point scale. Finally, the granting of advanced standing credits may be contingent upon a student receiving a grade of B or better in all relevant social work major courses. BSW graduates who are not granted admission to an advanced standing track can enroll in a program’s traditional track in order to earn their MSW degree.
