Master of Social Work (MSW) Programs in New York - Campus and Online

Updated: March 20, 2024

The State of New York has 23 schools that currently offer Master of Social Work (MSW) programs with various structures and formats. All of the schools in New York that have MSW programs offer at least one track for traditional students, which is the designation for MSW programs that do not require a bachelor’s degree in social work in order to be eligible for admission. In addition, all 23 New York schools with MSW programs have at least one advanced standing track designed specifically for students who hold a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree from an undergraduate program that has been accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).

There are also five schools in New York that offer One-Year Residency (OYR) programs, which are traditional MSW programs designed for human service professionals who are currently employed in a social work setting and are thus able to complete credited internships at their place of employment.

All of the schools that currently offer MSW programs in the State of New York have programs that are either fully or partially campus based. Partially campus-based programs, commonly referred to as hybrid programs, provide students with a mix of on-campus classes and online instruction, but are generally not a practical option for students who live beyond commuting range of the campus on which the program is offered. There are also eight New York schools that have online MSW programs. These are defined as programs that provide all or most of their instruction online and that do not require students to attend more than two campus visits per year.

The 23 colleges and universities in New York that offer MSW programs are all fully accredited by the CSWE, as is noted in the list below.

  • Adelphi University (Accredited)

The MSW programs offered by each of the schools listed above are detailed in the sections below. Programs are grouped based on whether they are designed for traditional students or for BSW program graduates (i.e., those eligible for advanced standing status). Within these groupings, campus-based and hybrid programs are separated from programs that are offered online. For convenience, campus-based programs are also grouped by region within each section.

Traditional MSW Programs in New York

There are 23 schools in New York that offer CSWE-accredited MSW programs in a traditional format for students who hold a bachelor’s degree in any field or discipline from a regionally accredited college or university. Eight of these schools have online program options for traditional students.

Traditional MSW programs are full-length master’s programs that do not require applicants to have majored in social work or to have earned a bachelor’s degree in social work (BSW). These programs typically require a commitment of two years (four or five semesters) from students who enroll full-time. Students who choose to earn their degree on a part-time basis typically graduate in three to four years. As part of a traditional MSW program, students are required to engage in a minimum of 900 hours of field education, a signature pedagogy in social work that involves experiential learning under the supervision of a qualified social worker at an agency or organization where social work services are provided. Site-based field education is required of students in both campus-based and online MSW programs.

Advanced Standing MSW Programs in New York

Advanced standing is the designation for MSW program tracks that are designed specifically for students who have successfully completed a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program offered by a school that has accreditation from the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). CSWE-accredited BSW programs require students to take many of the same foundational social work courses that traditional standing MSW students take during the first year of their MSW program and to complete several hundred hours of field education prior to receiving their BSW degree. Rather than requiring BSW graduates to repeat this coursework and field education at the master’s level, advance standing program tracks provide qualified students with a way to begin their MSW studies with the advanced specialization coursework and field education that comprise the second year of most full-time, traditional MSW programs.

As a result, advanced standing students can earn their MSW in roughly half the time it takes to complete a traditional program, which equates to one year of full-time enrollment or two years of part-time enrollment. The number of field education hours required of advanced standing students varies by program, but MSW students are required to complete at least 900-hours of field education. Advanced standing MSW programs typically have selective admissions with higher minimum GPA thresholds and many require applicants to have earned their BSW degree within the last five to seven years. BSW graduates who do not qualify for advanced standing MSW programs can still earn their MSW by attending a traditional MSW program.

All 23 of the colleges and universities in New York that offer MSW programs have at least one fully or partially campus-based advanced standing MSW program track, and there are eight New York schools that offer online advanced standing MSW programs.
